William Clay Ford, Sr.

The last surviving grandson of Henry Ford (yeah, that one) has passed away.  Mr Ford was 88 years old and served as the Chairman and Owner of the Detroit Lions.

As team owner and chairman and executive of the Ford Motor Co., Ford was worth an estimated $1.4 billion.Ford was married to the former Martha Parke Firestone, an heiress to the Akron, Ohio, rubber fortune. Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone were giants in the American automobile industry and close friends. They had three daughters, a son, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be private.

No real word on the ultimate impact on the team has been announced.  The Lions did release this statement...

The Lions announced Monday that Ford's interest in the team passes to Martha Ford.

"Pursuant to long-established succession plans, Mr. Ford's controlling interest in the Lions passes to Mrs. Martha Ford," team officials said in a statement. "She and her four children will continue to be involved in the ownership of the franchise, as they have during Mr. Ford's tenure."

William Clay Ford, Jr. will remain vice chairman.

We shall see....
