Well that didn't take long! The bill was dead on arrival. With a rapier like pen and degree of backbone unseen in the Washington DC area for awhile, President Bush vetoed the "War Spending" bill shortly after it landed on his desk.
The pork laden "War Spending" bill, you remember, the one with 25 BILLION in programs to save pretty much everyone who voted for it favorite cause. That's how HRH Pelosi garnered support for the bill, by promising YOUR tax money for pet projects. No vote, No project. Still drawing a blank? Okay, let's review...
Democrats also included about $20 billion for domestic spending, which Bush and congressional Republicans attack as pork barrel spending. The money would go for a variety of programs including veterans' health care, Gulf Coast hurricane aid, health care for poor children, drought relief for Midwest farmers and California citrus growers, and $60.4 million to help Pacific Coast salmon fishermen. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., announced that the bill also includes $94.1 million to repair California levees.
But the bill dropped a House provisions sought by Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, that would have provided $25 million to help California spinach growers recover from last winter's E. coli crisis.
Say it with me "War Spending" bill....What does that mean to you?......spinach growers, drought relief, levee repairs, aide to salmon fisherman......R I G H T .....I am sure these are all wonderful causes, but the war is in Iraq.
"War Spending" bill, indeed........
