The Mustang is my all-time favorite aircraft. I had the great good fortune to see Bob Hoover fly his Mustang on the air show circuit back in the '60s (several times) and that guy put on one HELLUVA show.
As for the sound... I prefer those big-ass P&W radials, but a Merlin ain't BAD. ;-)
Met Bob back in the late 70's. He would hang around the FBO I worked at in Michigan. Came in once a year with the Shrike to do airshows.
Saw him again in Reno in 1980. I was hanging with an air racing team and he had the pace plane.
Good guy, funny as hell.
