First, Get a Lawyer!
The fires are abating and the house is a pile of rubble. The sad news is your problems are just beginning. You now have an Insurance Claim. You are about to enter the Twilight Zone of the arcane world of fire insurance coverage. Good Luck.

Homeowners Insurance Company’s are flying in “adjusters” from across the country to handle the claims of individuals like YOU. Highly trained professionals schooled at the Academy of Saying No are about to take control of your life. They are backed up by entire departments of Lawyers, who formerly served as instructors at the Academy of Saying No. They are here to help you. Bwhaaaaaaaahhhhhaa!
Gather round children and listen to the Rumbear. Insurance companies make money by taking it from you. (i.e. Premiums, fees etc.) They do not make money by giving it back to you. (i.e. Claims, toasters, anything “free”). It’s all about the money. They have it, you are entitled to some of it. Good Luck.
Let's look at the playing field this situation presents......Having just lost your home, let’s assume that your frame of mind is somewhere between highly stressed and nervous breakdown. Suffice it to say that you are not in any shape to negotiate with anyone on anything. Yet, the adjusters are here. They want answers, now. Here’s the scenario……Can’t think, take this check, sign here, and we will move along. Claim closed. NEXT!
If the situation sounds like it is stacked against you, that’s because it is. The goal of the insurance carrier is to limit the total dollar amount of claims, all claims, including YOURS. Remember, that’s how they make money. You need help.
Do yourself a favor. Level the playing field just a little. Get everything you are entitled to under the policy. Get a lawyer. Somebody who can fight for you. Get a lawyer who has dealt with insurance companies. If you can, get one who has worked for insurance companies. We are partial to this guy, but we are bias. Be that as it may, GET A LAWYER!
And now back to our regularly scheduled banter…….
