RIP...

The Dead Poets Society gained another member this week.  Maya Angelou assumed room temperature after a rather interesting life.  She wrote a book, supported commies, and recited some poetry at Bill Clintons inauguration.  She was also a retired hooker and taught as a professor at Wake Forest, although she never had a college degree.

“I’m not modest,” Angelou explained last year to the AP. “I have no modesty.” She got to know herself, apparently, after getting to know poetry and politics and songs and stage. She usurped her parents’ privilege by renaming herself after finding “Marguerite Johnson” not quite arresting enough. In this spirit, she insisted that others call her “Dr. Angelou” though she never obtained a college degree.

The doctor without a doctorate became a teacher without students at Wake Forest. “She collects an annual salary well into the six figures, yet presently teaches no classes and has no campus office,” John Meroney, then a senior at the North Carolina school, wrote in The American Spectator twenty-one years ago. “The office listed for her in the Wake Forest telephone directory is a storage closet in a building far from the main part of campus.”

So, that is that....

UPDATE: Looks like Rodger the Real King of France & Captain Capitalism have  a little more on this poet...

The Rat Pack Was In Town....

The Captain has the orders.

More here.

How Does One Say Horse's Ass in French?

The Habs are battling with the New Jerk Rangers in the Stanley Cup conference finals. Prior to the games in Montreal the Habs have these little bounders on the ice to welcome the team.  Watch what Derek Dorsett does to one of them.

Go a little further down in the article and see the same guy utilize a head butt.

Horse's ass indeed.

Want.

Somewhere between "Must Have" and "Need"......

Coffee Achieved!

Up early with a busy day ahead but I spent a few lazy moments over rambling around the Intrawebs.

I stopped by the Art of Manliness and checked out the new articles.  Good stuff over there.

I headed over to Home on the Range to see what Brigid is cooking up.  Pleased to learn that the great Book of Barkley is heading to the publisher. I also learned about a Labapalooza event.

A quick stop by the Captains place to make sure everyone is Enjoying the Decline with their Worthless degrees while pondering the days of Bachelor Pad Economics.  Aaron has been on a tear writing books on topics of the day.

I flew by the Sarges place for the Friday Flyby. That invariably leads to The Open Road postings.

Straggled into Buck's place to catch the Happy Hour Soundtrack.  Same as it ever was... Same as it ever was...

The Old Retired Petty Officer has a good post up on Mr. Tesla.

and stopped by Proof's place to check out the news and the Rule Five Roundup. (Seriously, I only go for the articles....)

Now if you will excuse me, I have a morning to get to.....

25 Years....

That last post got me reminiscing....25 years ago.

So here's the deal.....I flew back to Cinncitucky International. Jump seat out of SFO in a DHL freighter, if memory serves.... Met up with Gator at the airport. Played golf, loaded up a huge motor home and rumbled north to Indy. Race day, we had seats between turns 3-4.
Now in February of that year I had taken a Bar Exam test for California. The results generally came out at the end of May. No need to sit at home w a i t i n g ..... I headed for Indy and had a friend picking up my mail. It was time to check in.  I walked forever across the infield to find a payphone. Called my friend in California about those bar results. The letter said that The Committee of Bar Examiners is pleased to announce that..... Passed. Lap #3 at Indy. I do not remember much about the walk back. Smiling to much will do that to you. Good times and we had a race to watch. The rum did flow that day. Oh yes it did.... 10 feet tall and bulletproof.

I was sworn in on June 6, 1989.

25 years...........

Indy 500

It's Carburetion Day!
Known for many years as “Carburetion Day,” and shortened only in fairly recent years simply to “Carb Day,” it refers to the day on which cars qualified for the starting field are given the opportunity to practice in “Race Day trim,” as opposed to the less economical setups required for out-and-out speed during time trials. A major portion of this used to involve adjustment to the carburetors, but even after the introduction of fuel injection in the late 1940s, the original term “carburetion runs” continued to be used. For the record, the stock-block Ford-powered Lotus cars of Jim Clark and Dan Gurney in 1963 were the last to actually use carburetors on Carburetion Day.

The Indy 500 is this weekend. The "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" is truly an event to behold. I was there 25 years ago......GATOR! 25 Years?!! Holy jumpin!

Local boy Ed Carpenter has grabbed the Pole Position for the second year in a row.  C'mon Fuzzies!!

Pause.....

Whatever you are doing this weekend have a blast. However, at some point, pause, and give thanks to those who made it possible.

Memorial Day*

Who?

Article up over at NRO Online about the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania. Marjorie Margolies was trounced in the race by a young ner do well.

Why do we care Rumbear? Who is she?

Well, maybe you remember her as Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky. Married to Ed Mezvinsky. Still drawing a blank? Maybe you will recognize her inlaws.

Yeah, those two, er three.

"Last night, Marjorie Margolies, the only candidate both Bill and Hillary Clinton have gone all out for so far in this election cycle, was crushed in a primary for a Pennsylvania congressional seat she once held."

Walk with me down memory lane for a bit.  Allow me to refresh your recollection as the trial lawyers say.....

He is Edward "Ed" Mezvinsky, born January 17, 1937.

Well, he is a former Democrat congressman who represented Iowa's 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives for two terms, from 1973 to 1977.

He sat on the House Judiciary Committee that decided the fate of Richard Nixon.

He was outspoken saying that Nixon was a crook and a disgrace to politics and the nation and should be impeached.

He and the Clintons were friends and very politically intertwined for many years.

Ed Mezvinsky had an affair with NBC News reporter Marjorie Sue Margolies and later married her after his wife divorced him.

In 1993, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, then a freshman Democrat in Congress, cast the deciding vote that got President Bill Clintons controversial tax package through the House of Representatives.

In March 2001, Mezvinsky was indicted and later pleaded guilty to 31 of 69 counts of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud.

Ed Mezvinsky embezzled more than $10 million dollars from people via both a Ponzi scheme and the notorious Nigerian e-mail scams.

He was found guilty and sentenced to 80 months in federal prison.

After serving less than five years in federal prison, he was released in April 2008 and remains on federal probation.

To this day, he still owes $9.4 million in restitution to his victims.

About now you are saying, C’mon Rumbear…..so what!

Well, this is Marc and Chelsea Mezvinsky.

Thats right; Ed Mezvinsky is Chelsea Clinton's father-in law.

Now Marc and Chelsea are in their early thirties and purchased a 10.5 million dollar NYC apartment.

Now you know "The Rest of the Story"......
